This spring, advocates across the nation rallied together to speak up for the 40 million people trapped in slavery (Global Slavery Index, 2018). As a movement, thousands of you leveraged the power of digital tools to raise your voices to your members of Congress through tweets, emails and online petitions. Together, we urged Congress to ensure that the State Department’s Program to End Modern Slavery and the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Office are fully funded in the 2020 appropriations bill. Ohio State University student Kate Snow first realized her voice matters in the fight against slavery when she attended an in-district meeting at her Congressmans office in Ohio. Kate is now helping lead Justice Campaigns advocacy efforts in Ohio. Hear her story.
I am very glad to report that Congress has at last begun to move on the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA). IJM staff and friends have been eagerly anticipating this bill for months, and were thrilled when the Senates version was introduced on June 29.
